Limestone comes from seashells and corals, which are mainly calcium carbonate. Regions of the US where limestone is found are the Rocky Mountains, the valleys of the Mississippi, Ohio, the St. Lawrence River and a large part of Texas. Travertine limestone consists of calcium carbonate deposited from hard water. Stalactites and stalagmites in caves are formed in the same way.
